Housing Provider AHMT Gardening Competition: Congratulations Caitlin!
Updated: 28 minutes ago

Housing Charity, Alex Hogg Memorial Trust (AHMT), and Moorview Care work closely together to ensure that people’s housing, support and wellbeing needs are considered as a whole.
When someone moves into an AHMT property, the housing and support teams work together to create a home environment that is safe, comfortable and suited to their individual needs.
A big part of creating a home that people can enjoy and feel proud of is making sure they have opportunities to put their own stamp on their surroundings. This could be through decorating, personalising their space or, as we’ve seen this summer, getting outside and growing something of their own.
That’s why Moorview Care and AHMT were delighted to collaborate and bring back our annual gardening competition this year! The competition kicked off in June and has continued throughout the summer, giving everyone the opportunity to get involved, learn more about nature and discover how important plants and flowers are for local wildlife.
We’ve seen some fantastic gardens, creative ideas and plenty of hard work along the way. Thank you to everyone who took part, it has been wonderful to see people getting involved and enjoying the process. We hope to see the same enthusiasm continue next year!
And finally… a huge congratulations to Caitlin, who is supported in Whitby, that swept this year’s competition with her superb vegetable haul!
Caitlin has now won the garden competition for the second year running, and it’s clear that her garden is something she takes great pride in. Following last year’s win, she has continued to build on what she learned, experimenting with new ideas and discovering what she can successfully grow.
This year, Caitlin has been particularly proud of her first spiky cucumber, which grew to an impressive four inches long. After many daily checks and plenty of anticipation, it was finally ready to pick. Watching it grow from a tiny plant through to harvesting has been an exciting part of the summer, and Caitlin was determined to see it through every stage.
Over the past year, Caitlin's enthusiasm for gardening has continued to grow, along with her confidence in trying different ways of growing plants and vegetables. Reflecting on how her approach has developed, Caitlin said:
“I’ve learnt to not overwater my vegetables and plants.”
Her garden has continued to thrive, and she has enjoyed seeing the results of the time and care she has put into it.
This year, Caitlin has also started growing sweetcorn, sharing how:
“My sweetcorn is growing well, it’s one of my favourite veg!”
The enjoyment doesn’t stop in the garden. Caitlin has also been incorporating produce from her garden into her cooking, explaining,
“I’ve made a bramble and apple crumble using brambles from my garden!”
We’d also like to give a special shout-out to Beth, supported in Hull, for her fantastic work with the gardening club, and Rebekah, supported in Whitby, for her love of the bug hotel and beautifully established flower beds. Everyone who took part should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved.
Alongside creating enjoyable spaces, AHMT and Moorview Care are continually looking at ways to make sure people feel supported in their homes and that any issues can be resolved quickly.
Since introducing the ‘Fixflo’ system to manage repairs and maintenance, AHMT and Moorview Care have strengthened communication between the people we support, support teams, and the housing team.
Fixflo provides one central system where supported people, along with Support Workers, can raise repair requests quickly and, where preferred, anonymously. Repairs can then be allocated, monitored and completed efficiently, giving everyone greater visibility of progress and reducing the need to follow up for updates.
By bringing everyone together through one system, teams can respond more quickly to people’s needs and provide a more supportive, joined-up service. Ultimately, this helps us maintain homes where people feel safe, comfortable and supported to live as independently as possible.
Whether it’s responding promptly to a repair, creating a garden that people can enjoy and take pride in, or supporting someone to grow and cook their own food, each of these achievements makes a real difference to people’s lives. Together, they help create homes and communities where people feel valued, supported and able to thrive.
