Georgia's Litter Picking Success

Updated: 3 days ago

Wanting to spend time with her friend Zoe and try something new, Georgia asked to take part in a weekly community litter picking activity, unsupported. With the right planning and safety checks in place, including a charged phone, a little spending money, and a scheduled check-in call, Georgia set off with her friend to make a difference in her local area.

And what a difference she made!

“It’s really done me good.”
“I walked miles!”
“I really loved it!”
“I liked meeting new people there, such a nice group—there were about 10 of us in total.”

“We even found a shopping trolley!” (with lots of laughter)

Georgia’s energy and enthusiasm shone through as she threw herself into the activity. She collected a large amount of rubbish, helped clean up the environment, and had a brilliant time doing it. Her efforts were so appreciated that her friend treated her to a well-deserved bacon sandwich afterwards!

Support Worker in Whitby, Jo, shared her pride:

“Georgia has done so well stepping out of her comfort zone to join in with this activity. It’s been wonderful to see how much she loved it, and how positively she talked about it when she got back home. She’s been wanting to meet more people and to try something new, and she’s done so well getting involved - well done Georgia! We are all so proud of you.”

Team Leader Julia summed it up perfectly:

“Smashing it, Georgia!”

Georgia has said she’d love to do it again, and we’re sure this is just the beginning. Her confidence has grown, she’s learning new skills (including how to use a litter picking stick!), and she’s made new connections in her community.

We couldn’t be more proud of her achievements.

Danny, the groups organiser commented on their facebook page:

"Eleven volunteer litter pickers turned out to remove litter from Green Lane, Abbey Plain, Abbey Car Park, St Mary's Church Yard and Church Street. Multiple bags - 13 in all, were filled for North Yorkshire Council to collect.

Thanks to all our volunteers for your valuable time and efforts today, striving to help keep Whitby free of litter and rubbish, thank you for your continued support!"
